Crystal Care 101: How to Cleanse, Charge & Store Your Gemstones

Crystals are more than beautiful objects — they are tools you interact with regularly. And like any tool, they need maintenance.

Here is a simple, practical guide to keeping your crystals in top shape.

Cleansing Your Crystals

Crystals absorb energy from their environment. Cleansing resets them.

  • Running water — Hold under cool running water for 30 seconds. Works well for hard stones like quartz and amethyst. Avoid for soft or porous stones (selenite, malachite, pyrite).
  • Sunlight / Moonlight — Leave on a windowsill for a few hours. Full moon overnight is ideal for most stones. Avoid prolonged sun for amethyst and rose quartz — they can fade.
  • Selenite plate — Place your crystals on a selenite slab overnight. Safe for all stones, no water needed.
  • Smoke cleansing — Pass your crystal through sage, palo santo, or cedar smoke.

Charging Your Crystals

Charging amplifies a crystals natural energy.

  • Sunlight — 1–2 hours in morning sun for energizing stones like citrine and carnelian.
  • Moonlight — Best for intuition stones like labradorite, moonstone, and amethyst.
  • Selenite or clear quartz cluster — Place other crystals on top overnight to passively recharge them.
  • Earth — Bury in soil for 24 hours to deeply ground and reset heavy stones.

Storing Your Crystals

  • Keep soft stones (fluorite, selenite, kyanite) wrapped in cloth — they scratch easily.
  • Store tumbled stones together; keep raw/pointed crystals separate to avoid chipping.
  • Avoid direct prolonged sunlight in display areas for color-sensitive stones.
  • A wooden tray or velvet-lined box is ideal for display and protection.

How often should you cleanse? After heavy use, after someone else handles them, or once a month minimum for display pieces.
